Introducing The Duke of Edinburgh Award for Year 10 students

Dear Parent/ Carer

Duke of Edinburgh Award

I am pleased to inform you that students at Winchmore School now have the opportunity to participate in the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme.

The intention is to offer this opportunity to Year 10 students and it is anticipated that the first group would consist of 14 students. Students would all begin the Award process in January 2010 and start with the Bronze Award.

The aims of the Duke of Edinburgh Award include:

·          encouraging commitment and self confidence

·          encouraging team participation and organisational skills

. Each of the 3 possible levels, Bronze, Silver and Gold, is made up of four parts:

Physical (any sports activity outside of timetabled lessons but can include lunchtimes)

Skills (can include musical instruments, second language, choir, school club)

Voluntary (can include normal volunteering as well as Peer Mentoring and Academic Peer mentoring)

Expedition (two overnight supervised expeditions)

The level of commitment needed for each of these sections is dependent on the award level. For the Bronze Award two areas must be followed for 3 months and one area for 6 months and the Expeditions must be completed. All activities must be undertaken in the student’s own time

Each student would initially need to pay £12 for a record book and the expedition section will also incur additional costs possibly in the region of £60 per student. This figure could vary dependant on transport and camping site availability.

In order to start the Award process it is necessary for any interested Year 10 students to complete the form attached and to have it signed by their parent/carer. I would also ask parents to indicate if they are interested in attending an after school meeting to discuss this Award in greater detail.

I am sure this will prove to be of great benefit to our students and look forward to receiving completed application forms by 5th November 2009.

Yours faithfully
