Michael Jackson Award for Outstanding Achievement in Expressive Arts
A special trophy has been created in the name of Michael Jackson to be awarded annually to an outstanding student in expressive arts. After establishing links with members of the Jackson Family the school was delighted when Mrs Katherine Jackson offered to provide an award to the school.
The trophy in the form of a hand reaching for a star is fashioned in chrome and encrusted with crystals. It recalls Michael Jackson’s trademark accessory and has been provided and approved by the Jackson family.
Year 12 student Saul Nash was announced as the 2009 winner of this special prize at last term’s Winter Celebration concert
Although the trophy will remain in school Saul also received an engraved chrome star which he can keep and his name will appear on a roll of honour as the first recipient of this award which will be on permanent display at the school.
Mrs Jackson also spoke to Saul by telephone after the Award ceremony to congratulate him on his achievement.
Miss Bargent, Head of Expressive Arts, stated “This is a unique opportunity to celebrate all our students and to give them something to strive for. It has been a hard task making a decision on who will get the award since we have so many talented, hardworking students at this school.”
“The winner has helped choreograph a piece based on Michael Jackson’s ‘Smooth Criminal’ and has made a great contribution in every sphere of expressive arts. “
Cllr Glynis Vince, Cabinet Member for Education, Children’s Services and Leisure, said, “To have an award bearing the name of a world famous star is inspiring. Recognising emerging talent and hard work is always worthwhile and I know that many young people at the school will aim high in all they do.
