At Winchmore School, Exams Access Arrangements (EAA) are pre-agreed adjustments designed to ensure students with special educational needs, disabilities, or temporary injuries can demonstrate their knowledge without being disadvantaged by the assessment format. These arrangements align with the Equality Act 2010 to provide "reasonable adjustments" while maintaining the overall integrity and demands of the exam.
Types of Support Available
The school provides a wide range of support tailored to individual needs, including:
-
Time & Processing: 25% to 50% extra time, supervised rest breaks (for ADHD, ASD, or mental health needs), and prompters.
-
Reading & Writing: Readers (human or digital), scribes, word processors, and bilingual dictionaries.
-
Environment & Format: Modified papers (e.g., enlarged fonts), colour overlays, and alternative exam sites or "out of hall" arrangements.
The Referral and Application Process
Referrals typically begin with a class teacher identifying a "cause for concern," such as a student's inability to finish tests on time or illegible handwriting.
-
Evidence Gathering: Teachers and students provide feedback on specific difficulties. For Key Stage 4 and 5 students requesting extra time, mock papers must be annotated to show exactly how the additional time was utilized.
-
Assessment: The school uses standardised tests—such as LUCID Exact, CTOPP 2, and DASH—to evaluate processing, reading, and handwriting speeds.
-
Formal Application: ALU completes Form 8 or Form 9, detailing the student's history of need, and applies online to the JCQ (Joint Council for Qualifications) for approval.
