Enrichment is participating in additional learning opportunities so that you can develop strengths and skills beyond the classroom. Enrichment can support your course of study, generate knowledge and interest in additional subject areas, and assist with providing experiences that make for a well rounded person.
Enrichment opportunities are open for all students to join whether you are studying the affiliated subject or not - remember, enrichment can be supercurricular or extracurricular. Both are equally valued and encouraged.
-
'Super-curricular' activities are educational activities which go above and beyond the school curriculum.
-
‘Extracurricular activities’ are educational activities which are outside of the normal course of study.
The Young Journalist Academy
The Young Journalist Academy, established in 2008, encourages young people to engage with news and current affairs by creating their own School Newsroom and publishing their work to a global audience.
This opportunity has enabled some of our students to work with industry-trained broadcast journalists and other professionals to train them in all aspects of broadcast journalism.
Below are links to some of their published work:
Enrichment Programme
Enrichment Programme
At Winchmore Sixth form, students are given a dedicated single period each Monday period 5 to engage in or further develop their enrichment activities, whether this is independently carried out or as teacher-led sessions. This time will also be used for students to meet with the careers team, ensuring that they have received appropriate support and guidance to help them achieve their future prospects.
Students have the opportunity to engage in any of the several societies that are currently running. Meetings are held as a group, often with guest speakers or short tasks being set to help encourage understanding and enthusiasm for the subject matter. It is also a setting where support for university entry testing, such as UCAT and LNAT tests, is offered. The careers team supports the running of the apprenticeship and employment society, offering specific guidance and advice for students exploring these options beyond sixth form. Societies often participate in trips and are given opportunities that extend beyond the classroom, assisting with future prospects and helping students to gain valuable experiences that they can lean upon.
The societies we offer are:
- Law Society
- Medicine and Medical Professionals Society
- Architecture Society
- Engineering Society
- Economics Society
- Psychology Society
- Photography Society
- Politics Society
- Apprenticeship and Employment Society
- Stage Society
Sporting activities on offer include:
- Football
- Basketball
- Trampoline
- Table Tennis
Volunteering
Great emphasis is placed upon the importance of voluntary work in the 6th Form and students are actively encouraged to give something back to their school and wider community. Students may choose to volunteer in a field that they are interested in studying at university, or a particular career that they wish to pursue. Voluntary work develops self-confidence, communication skills and provides insight and experience of working with others in interesting, fun and different environments and assists in successful university and job applications.
