The MFL faculty aims to develop the linguistic skills of our learners as well as their cultural knowledge of the countries where French, German and Spanish are spoken. We aspire to equip all our students with the knowledge and skills to succeed in language learning by supporting students of all abilities and needs to ensure that they get their best language experience. Our curriculum goes beyond what is taught in lessons, as we wish our students to achieve the very best examination results possible but we believe in giving them the opportunity of experiencing the culture and language at first hand and to enrich their cultural capital. As a faculty, we offer a broad range of opportunities beyond lessons; we organise day trips abroad and we have a partner school in Spain, Murcia.
All students study a language (French, Spanish or German) at Winchmore. The curriculum is enriched by several cultural experiences offered to students such as trips abroad. The exam board is AQA for GCSE and A level.
KEY STAGE 3
All students in year 7 study French, Spanish or German for two hours per week.In year 9, the lessons will increase to 5 hours per fortnight. All students will continue to study their foreign language to GCSE level
The curriculum is enriched by several cultural experiences offered to students throughout KS3, such as an annual day-trip to Boulogne-Sur-Mer in France and a trip to the Christmas Markets in Lille. We also have a long standing link with a school in Murcia, Spain with whom we have had several residential exchange visits.
Students have the opportunity to attend after school language clubs with the foreign language assistants where they can improve and further enhance their language skills at the same time as having fun and learning about different cultures.
KEY STAGE 4&5
MFL continues to be a core subject at KS4 where all students take a language (French, German or Spanish) at GCSE. Students study their chosen language for 5 hours per fortnight.
The topics studied are:
- Home and Local Area
- Health and Sport
- Leisure and Entertainment
- Travel and the Wider World
- Education and Work
The exam board is AQA for GCSE, the students are examined on 4 separate skills;
- Listening – examination – 25% of total grade
- Reading – examination – 25% of total grade
- Writing – examination– 25% of total grade
- Speaking – examination – 25% of total grade
